The Little Silver House
My friend L loaned me The Little Silver House, by Jennie D. Lindquist, several months ago, and I have to admit that I've been rather reluctant to read it. It's the sequel to The Golden Name Day, which I wasn't all that crazy about (see here) and I've had so many other things to read... But L is coming to visit tomorrow night and I wanted to be able to return it to her, so I jumped right in and am glad that I did. Like the first book, The Little Silver House has a distinctively old fashioned feeling to it. It is very gentle and focuses on family relationships. No car chases :-) But I really came to like the characters. In the earlier work, the main character, Nancy, seems rather whiney and ungrateful. In this one, it feels like she has grown up and matured quite a bit, although in terms of time, it takes place right after the first. She is much kinder and is focused more on others than herself, which I really appreciated. The ending of the book was not a surprise- I guessed correctly by the middle of the second chapter how everything would come out- but it was rather satisfying nonetheless. All in all, I would give it two thumbs up, and I will be hunting out the third (and last) of the series in the near future.
