GATTACA

After several years of students referring to the movie GATTACA in genetics papers, I finally saw the film and know what they're talking about. I really enjoyed this film and am debating about whether to show it in class next year (although it seems like everyone had seen it but me...) It addresses many of the issues regarding eugenics, privacy and the possible discrimination that could occur if too much genetic information is released- to insurance companies, employers, etc. I thought the science part of the film was well done, and everything from the title (nucleic acid abbreviations) to the story was intriguing. The overall question of possibilities that the film discusses is an important one- you may be predisposed for a certain characteristic or trait, but allowing that to negate free will is dangerous.
