Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is my final book for the Expanding Your Horizons book challenge- and it's been great to end the challenge on a high note. Esperanza is a young woman being raised in an affluent family on a ranch in Mexico. Through a series of events, she and her mother must leave and seek a new life in Southern California- not as a family of wealth, but as workers living in an immigrant camp, picking grapes, potatoes, asparagus, peaches... The bulk of the story is about Esperanza's adjustment as she learns how to work- from washing and dressing herself, sweeping the floor, cooking, and caring for young children, to working in the fields. It's a true journey to maturity. I found myself getting very much attached to the characters, Esperanza in particular, and by the end of the book I was so proud of her, I think I was beaming. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

So glad you liked it. M really liked Paint the Wind by Ryan, too, if you like horse books. :)
